Expert Opinions on the all new Ram 1500: The Most Awarded Light Duty Truck in America

Named 2019 North American Truck of the Year - North American Car, Utility, and Truck of The Year Awards at the North American International Auto Show

"Ram continues to lead the way in making a big truck double as a big family pleaser with as much attention paid to interior conveniences and ride comfort as to cargo hauling and towing," said John Davis, executive producer at MotorWeek.

"The all-new 2019 Ram 1500 is a no-compromise truck, leading in luxury, efficiency, capability and innovation. Ram leads the full-size truck segment with significant gains in fuel efficiency through an all-new eTorque mild hybrid system in both V-6 and V-8 configurations."

Unanimous Winner of Motor Trend's 2019 Truck of the Year

"No pickup in the segment better balances capability, efficiency, value, and quality. For that, the Ram is our 2019 Truck of the  Year."

"Despite the many hats we expect our trucks to wear, at their heart, they are beasts of burden. To that end, the 2019 Ram 1500 excels."

"We were particularly impressed by the level of fit and finish."

"Although the Silicon Valley-aping infotainment suite will certainly draw eyeballs in showrooms, the cabin's functionality and furnishings are even more impressive."

"In a first for pickups, the new Ram 1500's higher trim levels have a rear bench seat that reclines up to 8 degrees and is heated and cooled, as well. Ever been chauffeured in a truck before? Now you can be."

"The 2019 Ram 1500 ...provides a level of quality and design that could have the competition chasing it for years to come."

"The more time we spend in the new Ram 1500, especially in the upper trim levels, the more we're blown away by the quality and attention to detail - we've never seen anything like this in a pickup truck and have been in few luxury sedans, crossovers or SUVs that meet this standard."

"No matter what you need your pickup to do, the new Ram 1500 will do it with more style and composure than anything else with a bed."

2019 Ram vs Ford, Chevy, Toyota, and Nissan

The Ram 1500 vs. the Ford F-150
Both the Ram 1500 and the Ford F-150 are available in several configurations and engines combinations. While both are leading sellers, popular opinion puts the new Ram 1500 way ahead in key areas.

2018 Ford F-150 Truck

  • Engine options: Both come with a variety of engine options, but only the Ram has V6, the performance leading HEMI V8 and the EcoDiesel V6! The Ford F-150 still doesn't have a diesel option (maybe in the future). And no other company offers the HEMI!
  • Standard power: If you plan on going with the entry level trim and base engine in your truck, you'll get more power from the Ram 1500 than the Ford F-150. The standard V6 engine for a Ram 1500 is a 3.6-liter with an output of 305 horsepower. The standard V6 for the F-150, on the other hand, is a 3.3-liter with only 290 horsepower. The Hemi 5.7 liter offers a class leading 395HP!
  • Utility: If you need your new truck for work, the Ram 1500 is the pickup for you. The first two trim levels that are offered are perfect for everyday work, with rugged accents and enough power to perform your daily tasks with ease. Plus, it comes standard with a Class IV hitch receiver and a spray-in bed liner, which are ideal for heavy-duty jobs. Comparatively, the Ford F-150 will only allow you to get those special features on the base trim as an add-on package at extra expense.

The Ram 1500 vs. the Toyota Tundra
While the Toyota Tundra only comes with a standard V8 engine…no other choices for your truck or your budget. With V6, V8 and EcoDiesel options, the Ram 1500 comes out ahead in this competition.
  • Diesel power: The 2018 Toyota Tundra only comes with a gas V8…no diesel-powered option. The Ram 1500, however, does give you the choice of diesel, with an impressive 3.0-liter V6 with 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque available in its roster of engine options.
  • Cab styles: The 2019 Ram 1500 allows drivers to customize any of the Ram 1500 trim levels with all available cab styles and bed lengths. Unfortunately, the Toyota Tundra has limited configuration choices. For example, the base Tundra SR is only available as the smaller double cab. This offers much less legroom for backseat passengers and is very different from the base model Ram 1500, which can be had in several styles from single cab to full crew cab!
  • Space: The Ram 1500 offers a more comfortable ride for you and your passengers, with more space, including more headroom, than all styles of the Toyota Tundra.

The Ram 1500 vs. the Nissan Titan
  • Cab options: The Nissan Titan doesn't allow drivers to have every type of cab in every trim level. In fact, the lower trim levels of the Titan are the only ones that can be ordered with a single, regular cab. If you choose to go with an upper-level Titan, the larger crew cab style is your only option.
  • Towing capacity: The Nissan Titan has a maximum towing capacity of 9,390 pounds. This is less than the Ram 1500, which can easily manage up to 12,750 pounds properly equipped.

The Ram 1500 vs. the Chevy Silverado
The 2019 Ram 1500 features coil spring suspension for a civilized and responsive ride, while the Chevy Silverado 1500  has leaf springs for a ride that is more bumpy and noisy, and somewhat less comfortable. With no diesel option, no HEMI, and less power, the Chevy Silverado 1500 leaves something to be desired in this head-to-head competition as well.

  • Power: The Chevy Silverado 1500 and the Ram 1500 both have standard V6 engines for their base models, as well as a more powerful V8 for upper trims. However, neither engine in the Silverado lineup is as powerful as the Ram engines. The standard 3.6-liter V6 for the Ram 1500 offers 305 horsepower, and the optional 5.7-liter V8 puts out 395 horsepower. Comparatively, the Chevy model's standard 4.3-liter V6 puts out only 285 horsepower, and its 5.3-liter V8 has a rating of 355 horsepower.
  • Diesel power: As with the other models in this comparison, the Chevy doesn't give light-duty truck shoppers a diesel-powered option. While the Ram 1500 has a great diesel engine that drivers can opt for on any trim level, Chevy Silverado 1500 drivers don't get that choice.
  • Ride quality: With its signature five-link spring-coil rear suspension, the Ram 1500 offers a smooth and even ride every time, regardless of whether your truck is empty or weighted down with gear. The Chevy Silverado 1500, on the other hand, doesn't have a standard coil suspension, meaning its ride quality is inferior to the Ram 1500. Plus, the Chevy truck's boxy shape makes for a noisy ride inside the truck, while the Ram 1500 is engineered for quiet and comfort.
